The short version
A VPN encrypts your traffic and sends it through another server, so your ISP sees a connection to the VPN rather than to the stream. It can improve privacy and sometimes routing. It does not change what is legal, and it adds a monthly cost and some speed loss.
- Using a VPN is legal in Canada
- A VPN does not change copyright law
- A VPN slows the stream a little; pick a server close to home
